2B MINDSET NUTRITION COURSE: Ilana Muhlstein at a glance

After I finished my personal training qualification, I knew I wanted to learn more about a few key areas: nutrition, preparing for pregnancy, and menopause. While doing some research, I came across a program that teaches individuals how to eat intuitively. This was a new concept to me, as I had previously been following a macros & micros based program. As I began to dive into the content, I was astounded by how much it resonated with me.


I have mentioned before in this blog that I have emotional eating tendencies. You too? It's something that a lot of people live with, but many don't speak about. As you know, I'm pretty well an open book! So I wanted to share with you my initial thoughts of the 2B MINDSET program & how I feel it will help me (and maybe you?) flip the narrative I have with food to a healthier one!



What is 2B Mindset?

2B Mindset is an avant-garde approach to sustainable, healthy eating. It is a video-based program that will help connect your mind and body so you can better understand your nutritional needs. Instead of diets that focus on what you can't eat (the elimination focus), 2B Mindset is grounded in focusing on what you CAN have. Feeling full, satisfied, and in control without ever having to worry about counting calories or measuring food.


Who Created the 2B Mindset?

This program was created out of necessity by Ilana Muhlstein, MS, RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) who created this program originally to help herself lose weight happily. As a self-proclaimed "volume-eater", Ilana states that she knew she needed to find a way to stay full without sacrificing her results. This program, created in collaboration with Beachbody, well-known for its iconic fitness programs and nutritional products like Shakeology®, has helped Ilana successfully lose 100lbs and keep it off. What's more, she's now managed to help thousands of men and women lose weight & feel confident fueling.


My journey with binge eating and elimination diets

When I was a young girl, my mom spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital. Walking into the hospital room and seeing her, pale and fragile, hooked up to the machines is one memory I don't think will ever leave. It was tough to watch her suffer from an undiagnosed illness that would cause her such severe pain. I remember how helpless I felt as I watched her struggle to keep the pain from registering on her face while we visited her.


It wasn't until a few years later that she finally got diagnosed with IBS (amongst a few other things). The knowledge that food was a big part of why my mom was so ill was groundbreaking. It shook me to my core and ever since then, I've been hyper-aware of how food affects me.


Cycling through stress-binge eating and elimination diets, I found myself struggling to find a healthy relationship with food. It's not even something I realised was happening. I don't ever remember me thinking 'I need to go on a diet', or 'I should/shouldn't eat that', it was just small, seemingly unconscious actions, that amounted to an unhealthy relationship.


2 years ago I was introduced to another nutritional program that did wonders! Fixate, a macros and micros program, uses coloured coded containers to help you establish healthy portion sizes and promotes a whole foods approach. It was through this program I learned how much I had been undereating.

But after about a year, I became complacent again. Totally self-inflicted, I know plenty of people who still follow the fixate program and are seeing great results in both their weight loss and weight gain journey. But I became lazy and started returning to old habits of turning to food for comfort during busy times.

Being an outspoken online health coach, I tend to get a lot of people turning to me for advice about food & fitness. One popular topic that always seems to come up is emotional eating. As the questions continue to roll in, the more I have felt responsible to take action. And so, a great mentor of mine, recommended that I check out 2B Mindset. She described it as an online course that teaches you how to eat intuitively. I had no idea what this meant! So I watched the video I'm sharing below, and it all began to click. This program, while designed for weightloss, seems to be the missing link to my own journey. While I'm not looking to lose weight, the principles are still powerful in helping us understand our body. And unlike most programs, it goes the step further in helping you re-wire your brain so you no longer revert to bad habits. Something that many of us, Taylor Swift included, often struggle with.

2B Mindset: The Journey Begins

While I am still learning and going through the videos, I thought it was important to highlight this revolutionary program. Already, I feel a lot more motivated to learn about my unique body's needs and I am feeling more confident in fuelling my body. While I am not perfect and have definitely felt the urge to binge on chocolate during stressful periods, the mere fact that I am aware now gives me the opportunity to regain control.


2B Mindset vs The Ultimate Portion Fix

While UPF is a system that encourages you to learn portion sizes for various food groups, the 2B mindset doesn't use any form of measurement. Instead, you are provided with different "plates" that demonstrate the portion of each food group for each meal: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. These food groups are heavily dependent on vegetables, though it is a balanced mix between proteins, fiber-rich carbs, and healthy fats.

Another element of 2B Mindset that differs from UPF is the big focus on hydration. This is a topic that is widely discussed but still not very effectively put into practice. 2B Mindset, however, encourages us to drink 16oz of water before every snack and meal to help us feel fuller longer but also to ensure optimal hydration.

There's a huge emphasis on vegetables. Which I'm not opposed to by any means. I do believe that this shift of focus from carbs to vegetables can be a deal-breaker for some unadventurous souls.



Who I think this is for

This program sets itself apart in that it's not only a weight loss program but it can help with many other facets of life as well:

- if you can't workout because recovering from injury

- if you don't like working out but still want results

- if you're pregnant or trying to conceiving

- if you're looking to understand your body's reaction to certain foods

- if you're struggling with emotional eating


Overall opinion

So far, I'm really digging this program and am excited to help others get started in better understanding their own triggers and bodily needs. Though I must admit, I'm a little wary by having to step on a scale so much. This is something we don't even own in our house and I don't have the best relationship with. So going into this program, I'll need to have an open mind about using it as a tool rather than as a punishment or praise. On the whole, I think this program can be really helpful for individuals who are keen to try something new and step away from the traditional elimination programs that aren't sustainable. But if you're not good with tracking, or not feeling the veggies fist motto, I think Fixate is definitely a better solution for you.
